Tips for remodeling a bathroom

Remodeling or renovating a bathroom requires plenty of consideration and planning, including budgeting and choosing the most appropriate materials.

It is especially true about the bathrooms in old houses in Budapest, that often require full scale modernization to meet today’s standards and to house such things as heating boiler, radiator or rain shower.

Unless you are  DIY-ing, you will need a renovation contractor to do the job, and you can take a look at our tips on how to choose the contractor in Budapest.

Budgeting. Make a list of things that are must-haves. Say, good sized bath and enough storage space is a necessity, whereas power shower or fog-free mirror are more a desire than need. Don’t forget to take into account not so obvious costs — accommodation for the time of renovations, takeaway foods, laundromat and so on.

Planning. One of the biggest expenses in a bathroom remodel is moving fixtures, such as the toilet, sink, shower and tub. Keeping the same floor plan can help you spend less on plumbing. If you have small bathroom consider such solutions to make it look and feel bigger as white or neutral colours, sliding door, glass shower screen, using niches for storage.

Materials. Choose the materials that last and are appropriate for bathroom conditions. Consider non-slippery, durable and water-resistant tiles, install ventilation and use special paints to prevent mold and mildew, sit in the bathtub before you buy one to make sure it is comfortable and deep enough. Make sure all required materials, fittings and fixtures are available by the time your renovation project starts.

Design. Unless you are ready to make your bathroom over every few years, go for classic, easy on the eye layouts and colour schemes. For pops of colour use accessories, mirror frame and bath towels that can be easily updated. Choose the right height before hanging your cabinets, lights, mirrors and hooks.

And last, but not the least — be patient and stay positive. Dream about that moment when you fill that new bathtub with hot water, light some scented candles and congratulate yourself on all the right decisions you made.
